Susan Myerson OBITUARY
Susan Myerson OBITUARY
Dedicated. Loyal. Loving. Tenacious. Determined. All words her friends and family would use to describe her, we lost a dear friend, mother, and grandmother with Susan’s ing on May 15th. Born in Chicago on June 30th, 1942, to Robert Knox (RK) and Katharine Smith, Susan was the elder of their two daughters. An adventurous childhood saw the family live in many different places, including New York, Mexico City, Paris, Virginia, and Texas, before eventually moving to La Jolla, a favorite family vacation spot for years.
After receiving her BA in English at San Diego State, she went on to earn an MA in English Literature and an MS in ancy, both also from San Diego State. Susan’s professional life as a A spanned four decades, during which she specialized in fiduciary income tax and trust and estate planning. She enjoyed her work both with larger firms and later in her own private practice.
Susan married Jerry Barber in 1963, and they had two sons, Scott and Alex. They later divorced, and in 1981 she married the love of her life, Bart Myerson. She shared just nine years with him before cancer took his life in 1990. The void he left behind in her heart was never filled.
Beyond her love and deep pride for her two sons, her greatest joy was her grandchildren. The eldest, Katharine (Kate), opened the world of being a grandparent to her, and they enjoyed many overnight visits, shopping trips to the mall, and Starbucks runs. Later came her younger two grandchildren, Addison (Addi) and Axel. Susan had the joy and privilege of getting to do it all over again with them, as they visited her in La Jolla frequently, and enjoyed trips to the Zoo and fun walks in the neighborhood. Seeing her world anew through their young eyes delighted her.
When not burning the midnight oil preparing her clients’ returns, Susan was often found in her garden, where she tended to her beloved roses. During rose season, a bouquet of home-grown blooms could always be found on her counter, and they never disappointed in their beauty. She also spent time through the years volunteering for a number of entities, including Las Patronas, Junior League, Bird Rock Elementary, Muirlands Junior High, and St. James by-the-Sea.
Susan carried a deep Episcopalian faith throughout her life, and the community and church family she found at St. James meant the world to her. The church was there to her through her second husband’s illnesses, comforted her when he ed, ministered to her as she battled back from a near-death experience, and continued to hold her up each week during Sunday service.
Susan was diagnosed with dementia in the final years of her life, and her hard-won restored health took a challenging turn. She ed away after a short illness, her treasured boys Scott and Alex at her side every step of the way. She was predeceased by her second husband, Bart Myerson; and is survived by Scott, his wife, Tye, and their daughter, Kate; Alex, his wife, Alexis, and their children, Addi and Axel; her sister, Nancy Rasmussen; her nephews, Kevin and Ben, along with their families; and many, many friends. A celebration of Susan’s life will take place at 1:30pm on June 7th at St. James-by-the-Sea. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. James.
Rest easy, Susan, we know you were welcomed home into both God’s and Bart’s loving arms.
