An alleged gunman was detained by witnesses outside of the UEI College campus in Oceanside after the weapon the man was carrying went off during a fight on Thursday, police said.
The incident was reported around 3:20 p.m. on Mission Avenue near Canyon Drive, police Lt. HJ Farney said.
Farney said dispatchers had received a call that there was a fight outside the campus between two people. During the fight a gun fell to the ground and went off.
“It wasn’t necessarily discharged at anybody intentionally,” Farney said. “But during the altercation, when the gun fell, there was a struggle for it and it went off.”
Witnesses then moved in and detained the alleged assailant until police could arrive.
No injuries were reported, Farney said.
Details about the circumstances surrounding the fight and the witnesses who detained the gunman were not immediately available.
The incident is under investigation.
