UPDATED:

San Diego police are investigating a fatal shooting in City Heights early Tuesday.

Someone called 911 shortly after 3:20 a.m. to report the sound of a gunshot at Olive Street near 40th Street in the Swan Canyon area, police said. The witness looked outside and saw a man down in the street and another man wearing all black standing nearby, said homicide Lt. Lou Maggi.

The man in black escaped down an alley on 46th Street, and a search of surrounding streets and a nearby canyon came up empty, police said. A detailed description of the suspect was not released.

The victim, a man in his 70s, was found dead on the ground between two parked cars, Maggi said. The man’s name was not released.

Detectives were processing the scene for evidence, interviewing witnesses and looking for security footage.

Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 888-580-8477.
