Re “San Diego launching analysis of money disparities between neighborhood rec centers” (May 28): The recent announcement of the city survey to review how the city can fix stark disparities between recreation centers needs to be applied to the library services of our neighborhoods.
As a former member of the Clairemont Town Council, I became aware that the Balboa Library — which was slated for replacement in 2008 to meet minimum recommendations but had its funding recalled due to the financial crunch of the time — has never been rescheduled for review and upgrade. Instead, we continue with a one-room level of service while new multimillion-dollar projects get pushed to the head of the line in more affluent neighborhoods. Library services are even more essential to our less affluent neighborhoods. Politics and affluence should not be the determining factors in setting these priorities. Let’s get a library service survey done.
