How to avoid road closures, no-parking zones for this weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon

The race will close streets and prevent northbound access to state Route 163 from A Street to Friars Road between 5:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday

UPDATED:

The annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon — which winds its way through San Diego neighborhoods and streets — will bring road closures and no-parking zones to many areas along the race route this weekend.

This year’s marathon and half-marathon are set to begin adjacent to Balboa Park around 6:45 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

Both races will travel through Hillcrest, North Park and Normal Heights before the marathon breaks off from the half-marathon, event organizers said.

The marathon route continues through Mission Hills and Old Town, past SeaWorld and through Mission Valley before ending at Waterfront Park on Pacific Highway near Cedar Street. The half marathon will head back through Balboa Park and also finish at the downtown park.

Northbound state Route 163 will be closed from A Street to Friars Road, and a smaller portion of the southbound SR-163 will be closed between Park Boulevard and A Street. Off- and on-ramps for multiple freeways will also be affected.

Most road closures and detours will be in effect between 5:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The roads will reopen on a rolling basis. No-parking zones will also be set up along the route, and violators will be towed, officials said.

Race organizers partnered with the Waze smartphone app to advise commuters on alternate routes and closures for the weekend. MTS trolley services will still be operating, but multiple MTS bus routes will be affected. Riders were advised to check sdmts.com for more information.

A 5K race is also scheduled for Saturday at 7 a.m. and will close roads primarily in and around Balboa Park, officials said. The race will head up Presidents Way between Park Boulevard and east of Inspiration Point Way, before continuing across El Prado. Runners will then reach Balboa Drive and run northbound on 6th Avenue.

The race is predicted to end in Balboa Park around 8:30 a.m.
