Re “As drop in cigarette tax money threatens San Diego child services, supervisors step in to OK $4.3M” (May 20): All of our elected officials, including county supervisors, continue to have short-term vision. The recent U-T article noted a drop in tobacco use tax income negatively affecting children programs it funds. What were they thinking? Wasn’t taxing tobacco meant to help reduce tobacco usage? Now the intended effect leaves a shortfall they should have foreseen.

Maybe we need a college curriculum on politics you have to before running for office so we don’t continue coming up with these perpetual budget shortfalls.
