A community of military families faced major damage to their homes and vehicles on Thursday after a small plane crashed in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood.
Houses are burned and cars and trucks appear to be totaled. Donations are being collected for the residents — about 100 were evacuated from the area of Sculpin Street and Santo Road, southeast of Interstate 15 and Aero Drive — who will face major recovery needs in the days and months ahead.
On Thursday, a collection of items for the relief effort was taken at the evacuation center at Miller Elementary School at 4343 Shields St. Starting Friday, donations can go to the United Way location at 4699 Murphy Canyon Road.
Organizers are requesting diapers, wipes, non-perishable foods and gift cards for food and gas.
The Enlisted Project (STEP), which has an office in San Diego, shared Thursday that it’s collecting monetary donations for military families in need. On the company’s fundraising page, it shared that an anonymous gift is allowing for matching donations up to $20,000.
