UPDATED:

The CIF has held a state girls volleyball tournament since 2003.

It took until this spring for the boys to get their turn.

Starting Tuesday, the boys will compete in four, eight-team brackets in split between Northern California and Southern California, culminating in the May 31 state finals at Fresno City College.

The San Diego Section will have nine teams in the SoCal Regionals.

Carlsbad, the San Diego Section Open Division champion, and Torrey Pines, the Open Division runner-up, both will both play home games.

Carlsbad (35-2) is the No. 3 seed in Division 1 and hosts No. 6 Corona del Mar (24-6). Torrey Pines (33-8) is seeded fourth the same bracket and hosts Newport Harbor (26-11). MaxPreps has Carlsbad ranked No. 4 in the nation, Torrey Pines No. 12, Corona del Mar No. 5 and Newport Harbor No. 9.

Carlsbad beat Torrey Pines 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 15-25, 15-4 on Saturday, securing the Lancers’ spot in the regionals.

“We were challenged in a way that we had to answer,” Carlsbad coach Annette Bashford said. “Looking at the season overall, being able to set goals from Day 1 and then to accomplish the goals feels amazing.”

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (32-2) is the No. 1 seed in Division 1 and is ranked No. 1 in the nation.

St. Augustine (21-11) has a tough draw in the Division 2 regionals. The eight-seeded Saints will travel to No. 1-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei (27-12).

Francis Parker (23-12) is seeded No. 2 in Division 2 and hosts No. 7 Los Angeles Venice (36-6).

Classical Academy (25-13) is seeded No. 5 and travels to No. 4 Woodland Hills El Camino Real (27-13).

Canyon Crest Academy (40-2) is the No. 6 seed and will travel to Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro.

Clairemont (25-10) is the lone San Diego entry in Division 3. The third-ranked Chieftains host No. 6 Granada Hills Valley Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Mater Dei Catholic (28-10) drew the top seed in Division 4. The Crusaders host No. 8 Carson California Academy of Math & Sciences.

Fallbrook (25-14), the San Diego Section Division 4 titlist, is seeded No. 6 and travels to La Angeles Hamilton (10-16).
