Crews are battling a roughly 50-acre fire that erupted east of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Friday afternoon, which briefly threatening structures before they were able to stop its forward march, fire officials said.
The brush fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. near San Pasqual Academy “and ran up the hill” as it moved toward state Route 78, east of Escondido, Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said.
The terrain is too steep for bulldozers, he said, but several helicopters, two airtankers and an air attack plane were part of fight to douse the fire.
No evacuations were called for, and no injuries were reported, Cornette said.
As of about 4:30 p.m., crews had not established any containment lines around the fire, which appeared to be slow-moving and burning in light vegetation.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department was also fighting the blaze. A Fire-Rescue spokesperson said early Friday evening that crews had stopped the fire’s spread, and all of the air assets had been released from the scene, save for one helicopter.
