A woman who was found unresponsive in her Las Colinas jail cell died after she reached the hospital Monday night, sheriff’s officials said.
Investigators said the 31-year-old woman was discovered by the staff at the Santee jail during their routine supervisor checks around 7:25 p.m, Lt. Juan Marquez said. When the sheriff’s sergeants entered the cell, they found her unresponsive.
Officials called 911, and paramedics arrived to take over life-saving measures, Marquez said. She was taken to a hospital, where she died around 8:15 p.m.
The woman’s name has not been released, pending notification of her family.
Marquez said she had been in custody since Sunday after she was booked on suspicion of multiple theft allegations, including vehicle theft, and resisting an officer.
The Sheriff’s Office said the jail death is now being investigated by its homicide division. It also is being reviewed by the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the county’s civilian oversight body.
