A 24-year-old San Diego man was killed in an early morning crash Wednesday on Interstate 8 in Lakeside, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident was reported just after 1:20 a.m. on the westbound freeway, west of Old Highway 80, highway patrol officials said in a release.

A BMW sedan “lost control and drove off the north shoulder,” the CHP said.

The vehicle overturned down an embankment and crashed into a tree. The vehicle stopped on its roof, trapping the driver inside, then became engulfed in flames, the CHP said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of family.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
