Re “Mayor and congressman leaves behind legacy of service, scandal” (April 29): America has a perverse fascination with sexual scandals among elected officials. It was true of Wilbur Mills in the 1970s, Gary Hart in the 1980s and certainly Bill Clinton in the 1990s. Great leaders are not without fault, they are us. Bob Filner once arrived early for a Clairemont Town Council meeting and shook hands with every soul, being the last to leave. This was Bob Filner’s character and will remain his character. Our greatest danger in America is our hypocrisy in judgement. Let the perfectly adjusted among us cast the first stone.
