Investigators arrested a 22-year-old woman who was allegedly drunk when she crashed the Tesla she was driving into a guardrail, killing her enger, late Sunday evening in Chula Vista, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Officers received the call that a Tesla 3 had, for reasons still under investigation, veered to the right and hit a crash cushion on northbound Interstate 805 near state Route 54 around 10:35 p.m., CHP Officer Kimberly Gonzalez said.

The car then ricocheted and crashed into the guardrail for the auxiliary lane to the transition, Gonzalez said.

The man riding as her enger in the car suffered major injuries and died before he could be taken to a hospital, according to investigators. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

The driver, identified by authorities as Kara Johnson, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and then arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The crash is under investigation.
