UPDATED:

A 23-year-old man who was fatally stabbed after he allegedly threatened to attack his girlfriend and kicked in the front door of a Grant Hill home was identified Wednesday.

Officers first responded to the incident after they received a call from a woman who said her friend’s boyfriend was trying to force his way into the home on 28th and K streets around 12:40 a.m. Saturday, San Diego police Lt. Jonathan Dungan said.

Police arrived and found Joshua Cruz suffering from at least one stab wound to his chest, Dungan said.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators said they later learned that Cruz, who did not live at the home, had allegedly broken down the door and threatened to hurt his girlfriend, who was inside the house.

Once inside, he was stabbed, Dungan said. It was not clear if Cruz was stabbed by his girlfriend or the other woman at the scene.

The two women were at the home when police arrived. One of the women, 23, was temporarily detained but not arrested pending further investigation. Police did not provide her name.

“Detectives are currently investigating what led up to the fight and stabbing, and the precise actions of everyone involved,” Dungan said. “This will include collecting video evidence, interviewing witnesses and a detailed examination and analysis of the physical scene.”
