Storylines

Talking privately

In the 11 seasons of the Open Division, public schools have won every title. Torrey Pines has hoisted the plaque seven times, Poway and La Costa Canyon twice each. But the private schools are knocking on the door. Cathedral Catholic advanced to the 2023 final, where it lost to the Falcone 9-7. Bishop’s lost to Torrey Pines 10-5 in the 2022 final. Santa Fe Christian opens the season ranked No. 3, Bishop’s No. 4 and Cathedral Catholic No. 5.

Seven-peat for Torrey Pines?

Torrey Pines is aiming for its seventh straight Open Division title and is a prohibitive favorite.

Coinciding with the six straight Open Division championships, a Torrey Pines athlete has been named player of the year each of the past six seasons.

Rivals again

The biggest roadblock to Torrey Pines winning a seventh straight Open title is rival La Costa Canyon.

LCC will be plenty motivated after getting walloped by the Falcons 18-4 in last year’s title game. Torrey Pines owns the most total section championships, 11. LCC is next with eight.

Double-double

La Costa Canyon’s loaded lineup includes two sets of twins. Enzo and Eddie Lyons are senior defenders and play on Brazil’s national sixes team. Finn and Leo Nilsen are senior attackmen.
