UPDATED:

San Diego FC acquired Ghanaian defender WIlly Kumado from the Danish Superliga and signed him to a two-year contract with club options for 2027 and 2028, the team announced Monday.

Kumado, 22, is a product of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana. San Diego FC, the Major League Soccer expansion franchise, is building a similar academy on the Sycuan reservation in El Cajon.

Kumado will occupy an international roster slot for SDFC, which opens its season Feb. 23 against the LA Galaxy in Carson. The club’s first-ever home match is scheduled for March 1 vs. St. Louis City SC.

“We’re excited to welcome Willy to SDFC and back into the Right to Dream family,” said SDFC sporting director Tyler Heaps. “He is a fullback who can impact the game through his pace and technical qualities that we believe translate very well to MLS.”

Kumado spent the last two seasons with Lyngby Boldklub, starting 41 of 57 matches. Kumado spent three seasons (2021-23) with FC Nordsjælland, a Right to Dream club based in Denmark.

The club’s imprints are all over San Diego FC: Jeppe Tverskov and Marcus Ingvartsen both played for Nordsjælland, and assistant coach Frank Hjortebjerg previously worked for the club.

Away jersey reveal

San Diego FC will unveil its 2025 away jersey on Friday morning at Eighteen Threads, its team shop located in Mission Valley. The team unveiled its home kit, a navy blue primary jersey with a silver DirecTV logo on the front and silver numbers on the back, during a December event at the shop.

Friday’s event starts at 9 a.m. The first 100 purchasers will receive a free gift.

Kickoff party set

SDCFC will host a Season Kickoff Party on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium. The event runs from noon to 6 p.m.

Players will be on hand at the party, which will also include live entertainment, food and more.

Tickets to the party are free but must be claimed online. To sign up to attend, visit SanDiegoFC.com.
