Arrest made after two people fatally shot, car stolen in Barrio Logan

The man is accused of fatally shooting two men and stealing their car in Barrio Logan late Saturday — nearly driving off with a female in the back seat — before being arrested hours later

UPDATED:

A 23-year-old man is accused of fatally shooting two men and stealing their car in Barrio Logan late Saturday — nearly driving off with a woman in the back seat — before being arrested in Los Angeles County, San Diego police said Monday.

The incident began shortly before 9:40 p.m. when police were called to Newton Avenue near Sigsbee Street by residents who heard gunfire. Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds — an 18-year-old who died at the scene and a 23-year-old who was taken to the hospital, where he died, homicide Lt. Lou Maggi said.

The names of the men killed were not released. Both victims are believed to be recent immigrants from Venezuela.

Police said they believe the victims and a third person were in and around a parked vehicle on Newton when the suspect approached them and began shooting.

The gunman got into the car — a white 2012 Kia Forte that belonged to one of the victims — and then apparently noticed the enger in the back. He ordered her out of the car and drove off, Maggi said.

The age of the enger was not released.

Maggi said the stolen car, occupied by a man matching the gunman’s description, was later located by an automated license-plate reader in the Los Angeles area.

After the car and driver were spotted, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies arrested Guillermo David Gonzalez of National City on San Gabriel Boulevard in Rosemead shortly after 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Maggi said.

Gonzalez was brought back to San Diego and is being held in jail without bail on suspicion of murder, suspicion of carjacking and suspicion of robbery, according to online jail records.

Maggi said detectives are trying to locate and interview witnesses and are checking to see if any surveillance footage is available.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
