A 60-year-old driver suffered serious injuries Tuesday morning after running through a red light and crashing into an Oceanside police car, police said.
The collision occurred shortly before 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Mission Avenue and Roymar Road as the police officer was making a turn on a green light, police said.
Police said a driver in a white Toyota Corolla was heading west on Mission when he drove around other stopped vehicles, into the bicycle lane and entered the intersection without slowing or stopping.
The Toyota slammed into the front of the patrol car as the officer was making a left turn, police said.
The driver of the Toyota was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries and is expected to survive. It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated and released.
The intersection was closed for several hours as officers with the department’s major accident team investigated the collision.
