An evening of wine, food and a wide assortment of raffle prizes and silent auction items await those attending the third annual “Wine-Down Summer” event.
Organized by the Kiwanis Club of Pacific Beach, the fundraiser will return to the Broken Yolk Cafe in PB on Aug. 17.
For three years, the Kiwanians have put together the event to help the Pacific Beach community come together and fundraise for its schools and youth programs.
The club was founded in 1946 with the mission of serving the youth of the Pacific Beach community and ing community activities and organizations.
The Kiwanians have found the event to be popular and successful, with 60 to 80 attendees each year.
President Jim Moore said the club exceeded fundraising in 2023, in comparison to years past.
“Last year we raised over $6,000 which was more than the previous (year),” Moore said. “Everybody had such a good time. We need to raise the funds for the youth of the community.”
In previous years, Moore said the event featured more than 20 auction items and baskets. In addition, last year they had over three dozen bottles of wine available to taste before bidding.

Once again, appetizers will be provided by the Broken Yolk Cafe.
“The food was excellent last year,” Moore said. “The Broken Yolk really provided some hors d’oeuvres that you don’t see in their restaurant.”
As of late July, Moore said a variety of restaurants donated gift cards and swag to the auction and raffle, including The Waterbar, Mavericks Beach Club, Jordan (JRDN), Cafe Athena, bar Ella, Taco Surf, Powerhaus, Bare Back Grill, Dirty Birds, Fish Shop, Pacific Beach Ice Cream Co., Elixir Espresso Bar, Crushed, SD TapRoom and Scuderie Italia.
He said there will also be a cutting board from the Gallery At Land’s End.
In addition to food and restaurant items, attendees can look forward to fun activities and baskets up for auction and raffle.
“The baskets will have some items like a bottle of wine along with the gift cards,” Moore said. “We’re still waiting for other items.”
Some activities that will be offered include a half-day fishing trip for two on the Daily Double from The Point Loma Sportfishing Company. Skateboards from Arbor San Diego will also be on the table, as will surf lessons from the Pacific Beach Surf Shop.

Money raised through the event will be donated to groups like Mission Bay High School’s Key Club (a teen version of Kiwanis), Mission Bay High’s music program and Pacific Beach Middle School’s Kiwanis Builders Club.
Moore said the Kiwanis Club provides Mission Bay High School’s athletic department with trophies and $1,500 scholarships to selected graduating seniors.
At the local elementary schools, the Kiwanians honor a couple students each month. They also present the Kiwanis Hope of America Award to two students from each of the community’s five elementary schools.
Other local organizations and events they donate to include the Pacific Beach/Taylor Library, Concerts on the Green at Kate Sessions Park, the local police and emergency service appreciation night celebration (P.A.E.S.A.N.) and the art project at the Pacific Beach Recreation Center.
Moore said he’s looking forward to seeing the community come together for this annual event.
“We get a lot of people who enjoyed it the previous years, and they meet different people (and) mingle,” Moore said. “People who haven’t seen each other for sometimes a year. People catch up on stuff. They enjoy the drink, camaraderie and food.”
