Removing sea lions from La Jolla Cove would be unjust
Upon reading several news articles regarding the safety of sea lions at La Jolla Cove, I was deeply saddened to learn that three of nine sea lion pups were found dead within six days. What is even more disheartening is the proposal to remove sea lions from La Jolla Cove to ensure human safety (“La Jolla leaders want action to deter or remove sea lions at The Cove,” July 18, La Jolla Light).
It is my firm belief that displacing sea lions from their natural habitat at La Jolla Cove is not a justifiable solution. We must recognize that the water is their home, just as the land is ours. We are encroaching on their territory, and it is unjust to evict them for our convenience.
An important idea from the Sierra Club Seal Society is that the city must take action in La Jolla Cove by allowing lifeguards and rangers to put cones and tape around the sea lion pups so people know how far to view the pups from (“Advocates seek sea lion protection measures at La Jolla Cove,” July 25, La Jolla Light).
So far, with no action, pups are dying from being loved to death.
The way we treat wildlife reflects the ideals that define our culture. Just as we have a right to our house, so do the sea lions at La Jolla Cove. Eliminating them is disrespectful to the delicate balance of our natural world in addition to being cruel.
We have the chance to teach future generations the value of living in balance with nature, as well as a sense of ability and respect for all living things. Through education and awareness, we can foster a community that values and protects its natural inhabitants.

Let pinnipeds find comfort elsewhere
That’s enough! First the Children’s Pool, then Point La Jolla, now The Cove?
No way!!
Why don’t you reserve rooms at the La Valencia? Your sea lions and seals will have privacy, room service, a swimming pool and showers.
You all can stay there and protect them day and night.
