Elizabeth Benson, a former Bonita Vista High School star who won an NCAA women’s golf championship at UCLA, died earlier this month. She was 53.

UCLA announced her death Tuesday. Benson, then known as Elizabeth Bowman, played for the Bruins from 1989-93; she was a sophomore in 1991, when the Bruins won their first-ever NCAA title in women’s golf. She was a second-team and third-team All-Pac-10 pick during her college career.

Benson competed in 10 LPGA events before becoming hip director at San Diego Country Club. She is survived by her husband, Brad, a son, Brock, and two siblings.
