Re “A new law makes it easier to crack down on bike-lane scofflaws. To the man behind it, it’s a no-brainer for San Diego.” (May 3): The bike lanes in North Park and other neighborhoods are going to waste because very few people use bicycles for transportation in our city. I drive through and around the 30th Street corridor frequently, and on most trips never see even a single cyclist. Most instances of motor vehicles blocking the bike lanes are obviously busy people who are trying to cope with an artificial lack of available legal parking spaces for shoppers, bank customers, delivery drivers and even the U.S. Postal Service. The lack of legal parking spaces, particularly for the disabled, is deplorable.
Bicycling is impractical for most commuters, shoppers, diners and students. Bicycling is primarily a recreational activity here. Assemblymember Chris Ward, D-San Diego, is beholden to a small vocal minority of bicycling advocates and out of touch with the broader population. He apparently views himself as a visionary, a role for which he is clearly unfit.
