Re “Failure of SDG&E takeover reflects residents’ belief City Hall is incompetent” (May 17): Yes, “30 years of civic mistakes” make it clear creating a public utility for electrical service is a plan to fail.
Our utilities are supposedly regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission — what a charade that is. Our government tells us fighting climate change is our highest priority, but both the governor and Legislature fiddle while their appointees burn down rooftop solar and encourage higher electrical use from the grid. Those same utilities are some of their largest contributors.
The true answer is competition. States that allow competition have rates less than half ours. No creation of more mismanaged bureaucracy is needed. Everyone reading this knows that is what drives down price and improves quality in their private lives. Why don’t we try it?
