Torrey Pines High School’s boys tennis season of perfection continued Friday, May 17, but just barely. The Falcons (25-0) won quarterfinal and semifinal matches by identical 4-3 scores at the SoCal Championship at the Claremont Club to advance to Saturday’s championship.
Torrey faces reigning SoCal champion Irvine University High School at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, with the winner advancing to the first CIF State Championship next Saturday, May 25, at Fresno Pacific University.
In the morning quarterfinal match, the Falcons edged Palisades 4-3, then came back in the afternoon to defeat Studio City Harvard-Westlake 4-3.
Torrey’s win was built by its singles lineup. The Falcons swept all eight singles against Palisades and Studio City-Harvard Westlake, losing just one set.
Sweeping singles for Torrey were senior Robert Freedman, sophomore Andrew Li, junior William Kleeg and freshman Nile Ung.
“All our singles players played well, and it wasn’t a cake walk,” said Torrey Pines coach Bruce Taub.
Torrey defeated Irvine University 4-3 earlier this season in the finals of the National High School Team All-American Boys Tournament. The Falcons swept the four singles matches in that match as well.
Said Taub: “I would love our chances to do it again.”
