UPDATED:

The 4,000-foot-deep marine layer that coastal San Diego County experienced over the past couple of days will grow thinner over the weekend — but not thin enough to make people stop complaining about the seasonal plague known as “May gray,” the National Weather Service said.

Winds out of the west-northwest will steer moisture ashore, creating clouds that will flow all the way to inland valleys and foothills. Only the eastern slopes of the mountains and the low desert are likely to be sunny.

San Diego’s daytime high Saturday and Sunday will be 68 degrees, only one degree cooler than the seasonal average. But morning onshore winds will make it feel cooler, as was the case early Friday on San Diego Bay.

Temperatures will drop into the low 60s on Saturday evening, making a sweater mandatory for people planning to attend Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto at the Rady Shell on San Diego Bay. The music starts at 7:30 p.m.

A mixture of swells from the south and the west will produce waves in the 2-to-4-foot range Saturday, with sets to 5 feet, and 3-to-5-foot waves on Sunday, with sets to 6 feet. Strong rip currents are expected. Sea surface temperatures will be in the 58-to-64-degree range.
