La Cucaracha comic strip fans push back at critics who want it out of U-T

They say there is nothing wrong with cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz using his free speech rights or with the newspaper sharing his views

Re “Lalo Alcaraz’s La Cucaracha comic strip must go. It is blatantly political.” (May 9): I didn’t find the May 2 cartoon offensive at all! It was freedom of speech.

Parents, please educate your children, at an appropriate age, about world affairs and local issues, and read to them at an early age. A brain is a terrible thing to waste. You are your children’s first teachers, you choose their reading material.

But don’t prevent other citizens from reading/learning about the harm certain state governments are causing by dictating what women can choose to do with their bodies. Don’t be afraid.

I am surprised that people are calling for Lalo Alcaraz’s cancellation simply because he pointed out reactionary efforts to curb abortion in states beginning with A.

On second thought, I am not surprised. Some people don’t want to hear things they disagree with. Part of the fun of reading the newspaper is seeing different opinions. Even in the comics pages.

Please keep Lalo.
