EAST COUNTYEAST COUNTY — The Grossmont Union High School Board has picked a new superintendent to lead the 16,000-student East County district after a three-month search.
The new leader is Mike Fowler, a 28-year veteran of the district who is now the assistant superintendent of educational services. In his current position he oversees curriculum, student discipline and , special education, athletics and other areas.
He has previously served as principal at Granite Hills High, assistant principal at Granite Hills and El Capitan High, a curriculum specialist and a teacher at Helix High.
“Mike Fowler’s proven track record of outstanding instructional leadership, both as principal of our largest high school and as assistant superintendent of educational services, made him the clear choice to lead our district forward as we work to set a new standard for high-quality educational programs,” board president Rob Shield said in a statement.
Fowler succeeds Mary Beth Kastan, who announced her retirement in January. She had served only a year and a half in the position before announcing her retirement.
The board is expected to offer Fowler an official contract at its meeting on May 9.
“To be selected as the superintendent finalist for a district whose families and staff I have come to know so well over 28 years is both a tremendous honor and a humbling responsibility,” Fowler said in a statement.
Fowler will take over as superintendent at the start of the new school year on July 1.
