La Costa Canyon’s Mia DiGiulio has been named California Player of the Year and third-team All-American by Max Field Hockey.

A midfielder, she finished the field hockey season with 31 goals and 14 assists on a team that was 25-2, losing 1-0 to Torrey Pines in the CIF San Diego Section Division 1 championship game.

That loss snapped a 13-match win streak.

DiGiulio, who is committed to play next season at Cal, carries a 4.2 GPA.

She was also the quarterback on LCC’s flag football team, leading the Mavericks to a 7-5 record, losing 14-6 to eventual champion Classical Academy in the Division 2 semifinals.

Baumgarten honored

Hilltop High School plans to honor legendary baseball coach John Baumgarten with the unveiling of a bronze memorial.

The ceremony will take place on Sunday, Feb. 25 at the Hilltop baseball field. Baumgarten died in 2021 at the age of 80.

The ceremony will start at noon, with tributes scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and the installation of the bronze memorial at 2:30. There will be a tour of the facility and grilling of “Baum Dogs.”

The event is open to the public and will be moved to the gym in case of rain.

Baumgarten coached baseball for 29 years, finishing with a 407-209 record. His teams won CIF championships in 1979, 1983 and 1985.

Five of Baumgarten’s players reached the major leagues: Tommy Hinzo, Mike Jacobs, Rob Natal, Todd Pratt and Jose Silva. Baumgarten also coached football and was the school’s athletic director.

Carlsbad adding 3 to Wall

The Carlsbad High Athletic Wall of Fame, which numbers 27, will increase by three when football players Zachary and Cameron Thomas and golfer Alana Uriell will have their jerseys hung from the wall of the gym.

The ceremony is scheduled for halftime of the boys basketball game with Sage Creek on Feb. 6.

Brothers Zachary and Cameron Thomas played at San Diego State and are currently in the NFL, Zachary with the Rams and Cameron with the Cardinals.
