Craft on Third, an arts and crafts studio in downtown Chula Vista, is helping people channel their creative side.

The studio’s owner, Kathryn Ortega, said she decided to bring a new art space to the Third Avenue Village after being inspired by a studio in the Bay Area where people could create crafts and take them home.

Ortega’s studio at 282 Third Avenue offers a space where people can create paintings, charcuterie boards and other items. Craft on Third has also held workshops on cookie decorating, string art, succulent arrangements, slime and making chunky blankets. Workshops are one to three hours, with all materials provided.

Many of the studio’s customers don’t think of themselves as creative, but are excited to see what they can do.

“Everybody has just been having fun,” Ortega said. “We like to have that creative side come out of people and do something different than going out to dinner.”

Each workshop must be booked online in advance and is guided by an instructor, so people can walk out feeling proud of their accomplishment. Guests of all ages are welcome and everyone is encouraged to bring their own food and beverages.

Locals can also visit the studio during open studio hours to make a pre-selected craft on their own.

Born and raised in Chula Vista, Ortega always knew Third Avenue would be the ideal spot for her business. Celebrating the studio’s first anniversary this month, she said the has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Everyone is just like ‘Thank you for opening the space for our community,’” said Ortega, “(It’s something) different to do with your family, your kids, as a date night or with your friends.”

Craft on Third is open Tuesday through Sunday.
