The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous beach advisory that will be in effect until at least late Thursday night and possibly into Friday due to high surf and treacherous rip currents along most of the San Diego County coastline.
Forecasters say the northwest swell will generate waves in the 4-to-6-foot range on Wednesday in spots like Ocean Beach and Imperial Beach and up to 4 feet at Torrey Pines State Beach. The conditions will peak on Thursday, reaching as high as 7 feet in some areas. The waves will begin to subside on Friday.
Sea surface temperatures are in the 62-to-64-degree range in most areas.
The swell is pumping at a time when air temperatures are falling. San Diego’s daytime high is expected to reach 70 on Wednesday and 66 on Thursday and Friday. The seasonal high is 68.
