With the 2023-24 girls high school water polo season underway, La Jolla’s The Bishop’s School is on a quest for its sixth consecutive CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship and its 13th title in 14 years.
Seniors Kendall Wyer and Sofia Holman spearhead the Knights’ attack. But they will be missing 2022-23 Player of the Year Julia Bonaguidi, who is now at UC Berkeley.
A challenge may come from rival La Jolla High School, which has four senior standouts from last season’s team that reached the Open Division semifinals, including Margo Tempel and Katy Westphal.
Other players to watch this season from local teams are La Jolla High seniors Jordan Morrow and Austin Milligan and Bishop’s sophomore Aileen Shin.
La Jolla Country Day School does not have girls water polo.
Bishop’s and La Jolla are competing in the Western League of Division I in the regular season, which began Nov. 28 with Bishop’s defeating La Jolla 15-11. The teams will meet again Jan. 4 and 9.
Open Division playoff teams will be selected after the regular season ends Feb. 2, according to CIF.
