CHULA VISTACHULA VISTA — Jacob Davidson did it! He finally found the promised land.
He liked it so much he did it again; and again.
The Chula Vista High senior wide receiver found the end zone three times in the first half to lead the Spartans to a homecoming, 47-0 thrashing of visiting Southwest-San Diego Friday night in a Metro Pacific League battle at Chula Vista High.
“My people were here, I had to do something, it’s homecoming,” said the 5-foot-6, 144-pounder, who finished with four receptions for 162 yards. “I’m also in the band and they’re all here. I had to show up.”
The man distributing the ball, and very effectively, to Davidson and his talented receiver corps was junior quarterback Izaac Baca.
On the opening drive of the game Baca (12-for-19, 295 yards, 4 TDs) hit three straight completions for 61 yards, capping it off hitting Elijah Gillespie to a 10-yards score less than two minutes into the game.
For Gillespie (five receptions, 58 yards, TD) it was his 12th TD of the season, putting him one off the school record.
“Of course I want to get the record for the guy,” said Baca. “It definitely means a lot to me, too. The chemistry is there right now.”
He also wanted to get Davidson in the end zone; doing so on three of the next five Spartan TDs to take a 40-0 lead into the halftime celebration.
First they connected on a 29-yard score with 2:19 left in the first quarter. Davidson made the grab at the 10, a put a little inside-outside move on the defender for the score.
The next was the sweetest. Baca hit Davidson in stride down the seam for a 57-yard strike with 5:02 left before half.
The third, with the clock expiring in the half, Baca hit Davidson for a 47-yard score. Davidson did most of the work, cutting all the way across the field before turning it on for the TD.
In between there was a 15-yard TD rush by La’Darrione Perkins, with a Davidson extra-point run, along with a bit a defense.
Led by returning league Defensive Player of the Year Franky Olmedo, the Spartan defense held the Southwest offense to a minus-14 yards rushing in the first half.
Thirteen times on the night Olmedo and his fellow defenders threw the Raiders for a loss.
“Their quarterback (Justice Pigee) is really shifty so we knew we had to contain him and keep him in the pocket,” said Olmedo, holding Pigee to a minus-13 yards rushing on 17 carries.
The defense also contributed to the scoring.
Filling in for injured safety Oberon Tamashiro, running back Paul Alvarez picked off a Pigee and returned it 17 yards for a first quarter TD.
Alvarez would later explode for a 67-yard TD of his own for the only score of the second half. He would also pick off a second .
Both teams’ next opponent is Castle Park. The Spartans (6-2 overall, 2-0 Metro Pacific) go to Castle Park next week while the Raiders (5-4, 0-2) have a bye prior to hosting the Trojans in the regular season finale the following week. Chula Vista wraps up their season hosting San Ysidro.
