ADOBE by Jess Vargas, a home decor shop in Carlsbad, is sourcing artisan-made finds from across the globe that are both stunning and ethically sourced.
“All of our products are curated with sustainability in mind so (they are) eco-friendly, handmade and artisan-made,” said Vargas. Each item is a unique reflection of its creator.
“It’s just connecting that piece to the artists and telling their story in a different way,” she said. “I really appreciate everything in the store having a little bit of a story, so it just makes it that much more special.”
An interior stylist, Vargas stepped into the world of design during 10 years as a visual lead at the retailer, Anthropologie. She then started working on design projects independently, teaming up with small businesses and launching pop ups that eventually led her to launch her own store at The Beacon La Costa shopping mall, 7740 El Camino Real.
Inspired by her travels, Vargas curates a collection of goods from different parts of the world that tell the story of the artisan behind the craft.
Unique finds include teak root serveware from Bali, recycled hand blown glassware, handmade African baskets, Japanese ceramics, handmade items from Mexico and Thailand, and more.
She also offers styling services and a collection of hand-poured candles made with coconut and soy wax, seasonal member boxes.
Vargas said she loves being part of the Carlsbad community and collaborating with other businesses in the region like Kazi, a San Diego-based company that works with African women who weave artisan products.
When people visit her Carlsbad store, she said, they frequently comment about the nice smell “and the energy within the space.”
