CHULA VISTA — Izaac Baca made his point.

Chula Vista’s junior quarterback faced off against his old school for the first time on Friday and delivered, leading the Spartans to a 27-8 victory over Olympian in a nonleague contest.

“This means a lot for me, I went there as a freshman and don’t feel I was given a chance,” Baca said. “I wanted to show them who I really am as a quarterback.”

Baca showed Olympian with his feet and his arm. He completed 8 of 18 es for 164 yards and a touchdown and also rushed eight times for 17 yards and another score.

For the second straight year, the game started slow and ended with a bang for Chula Vista (4-1). Last year, the Spartans exploded for 32 third-quarter points to down the Eagles 42-12.

This year, neither team could get much going again early. In fact, they traded turnovers much of the second quarter.

An Olympian fumble and a 36-yard Baca-to-Elijah Gillespie set up running back Paul Alvarez for a 3-yard score and the initial lead with 3:54 left in the half.

“Every touchdown for me is personal,” said Alvarez, who lost his mother unexpectedly just prior to the opening game. “She helped me I’m sure tonight, I’m sure.”

Coming out in the second half, another 36-yard completion on a deep post to Gillespie was good for another Chula Vista score and a 13-0 lead with 9:40 left in the third quarter.

Olympian (2-3) got on the board with a big play of its own early in the fourth quarter. Jaylon Fuentes hit AJ Cadriel on a quick out. Cadriel made the defender miss, turned upfield, got a great block from Emi Lozano and raced 81 yards for a TD to cut the lead to 13-8.

The Spartans quickly squashed the Eagles’ newfound hopes. Chula Vista drove 78 yards in 12 plays to increase the lead back to 19-8 when La’Darrione Perkins took it in from a yard out with 3:58 left to play.

Chula Vista still had time for two more scores. First, defensive standout Frankie Olmedo tacked the Eagles’ Jake Marciel in the end zone for a safety with 3:26 left. Then Baca made it 27-8 to finish the night, going in from the 4 with 41 seconds left.

Alvarez led all rushers with 122 yards on 23 carries and a TD. Perkins added another 37 yards on 12 carries.

“This game was special, I called it,” said Alvarez. “Last year, we beat them and all week I was telling our other seniors we were going to win again.”

Gillespie led Spartans receivers with 95 yards on four catches for Chula Vista. Cabriel ended as the game’s leading receiver, pulling down four es for 126 yards and a TD.
