San Diego-based Perfect Snacks is still making fans with its protein-packed treats based on a lifelong family recipe.
“Consumers really appreciate how satiating they are,” said Leigh Keith, one of the brand’s founders. “When you eat a Perfect Bar, you are filled up — it really does act as a breakfast or a meal on the go.”
Keith grew up in a family of 13 kids that spent much of its time traveling cross country in a motor home. Her father, Bud, a health food pioneer, would make protein balls with nut butter, honey and superfood powders to boost the family’s nutrition in a tasty way.
In the early 2000s, Bud Keith was diagnosed with melanoma and the family faced mounting medical bills. Keith and five of her siblings launched Perfect Snacks in 2005, hoping to save the family from financial ruin. Their first product was the Perfect Bar, based on their dad’s recipe.
When the simple, healthy bar found an audience, the success was astounding. Perfect Snacks’ products are now carried online and in select grocery stores including Target, Starbucks, and Jimbo’s market.
In 2019, Mondelez International, the owner of Oreo, acquired a majority interest in the company, which the Keith family still runs out of its San Diego headquarters.
Perfect Snacks offers a variety of non-GMO treats including full bars, snack-size bars and cups. Each snack contains up to 17 grams of protein, a nut butter, organic honey and over 20 different superfood powders including kale, spinach, kale, flax and rose hip.
The snacks are gluten free with flavors like dark chocolate chip peanut butter, salted caramel and coconut peanut butter. They don’t have any artificial preservatives and will stay fresh for about seven days at room temperature.
