San Diego-based Nostalgia Coffee Roasters is creating deeper opportunities for underrepresented communities in the coffee industry, including women.
“As a gay women-owned coffee roaster…I realized the exposure and the voice we were going to have,” said the company’s founder, Taylor Fields. “(Having a) diverse team is the ingredient to making the best coffee and company.”
Nostalgia Coffee Roasters started as a mobile coffee trailer hand-built by Fields in 2018 and has since grown into a respected, award-winning brand.
Nostalgia imports coffee beans from places like Colombia, Mexico, Indonesia and Costa Rica, and then roasts them at the company’s headquarters in Miramar, where coffee tastings and private events are held.
The company also has a coffee shop at 10945 Vista Sorrento Valley, where coffee beverages, tea and house-made dishes are created daily.
A certified public ant-turned entrepreneur, Fields’ love of coffee runs years deep.
She is equally as ionate about advancing underrepresented communities in the coffee industry, making it a priority to give opportunities to women-owned coffee farms, as well as LGBTQ and BIPOC (black indigenous people of color) communities.
Noticing a lack of female leaders in the coffee industry, Fields created a team at Nostalgia that’s made predominantly made up of women who share the same values.
In addition, Fields said, half of the coffee produced by her company comes from women-owned farms in places like Brazil, Mexico and Sumatra, Indonesia. At the end of each year, Nostalgia gives 5 percent of its revenue to its coffee producers.
Sustainability is also a priority for the company, which composts all coffee grounds and uses fully compostable brew bags.
Coffee subscriptions, coffee brew bags, and more are available at nostalgiacoffeeroasters.com.
