Shunichi Saito of Japan improved his score a little bit on the second day of the IMG Academy Junior World Championships.
Following a 75 on the first day of the boys 13-14 division at Oceanside’s Arrowood Golf Course, Saito fired an 11-under 60 on Wednesday.
Saito’s round included nine birdies, one eagle and no bogeys. Saito started his round on No. 10. He birdied the ninth hole to card the 60.
The official course record at Arrowood is 62, shot by Justin Kim.
Wednesday’s Junior Worlds round was played from Arrowood’s second-longest tees, which measure 6,487 yards. The championship tees measure 6,721 yards.
Aaron Castillo, the director of golf at Arrowood, said he is awaiting a ruling from the Southern California Golf Association on whether Saito’s round will be recognized as the course record.
Regardless, Saito’s 60 shot him from 10 shots behind the leader to being in contention.
“What a round!!” Castillo wrote via e-mail.
Thursday is the final round of the tournament in all divisions.
