After an eventful early Preview Night at Comic-Con, the real thing is now under way.
Thursday was the first official day of Comic-Con, and from celebrity appearances to incredible costumes, there’s plenty to catch up on if you weren’t able to attend in person.
FULL COMIC-CON COVERAGE: Comic-Con 2022
Here’s some of what we saw on Thursday.
1. Giant Bowser
At the Nintendo booth inside the exhibit hall, fans can check out a 14-foot tall LEGO Bowser figure. Guests can line up to take a 15-second videos running away from the giant Bowser as his arms and head swivel around. The figure is at Comic-Con to promote the new (smaller scale) LEGO Bowser figure that will be available for purchase in October.
2. ‘Good Burger’ cosplayers

3. Costumes from recent Lucasfilm productions
Ever wonder what it would feel like to stand face to face with Darth Vader? His “Obi-Wan Kenobi” costume, displayed at Comic-Con with other recent Lucasfilm production costumes, may be the closest chance you ever get. A representative from Lucasfilm said all the costumed displayed in the exhibit hall were worn during production and they represent “The Book of Boba Fett,” The Mandalorian,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Andor.”
4. A squad of Inspector Gadget characters milling around the Gaslamp Quarter
Several Inspector Gadget cosplayers were wandering around the Hilton Gaslamp area. Among these were Liz Comer (left), Sifora Mchale (middle) and Amy McGovern (right). They are promoting Gamisodes Inspector Gadget, which is described as an “interactive gamified episode series” that will launch in 2023. Complete with masks and grey trench coats, the Inspector Gadgets were handing out QR codes for free limited-edition Gameisodes Inspector Gadget NFTs.
5. Comic book sales to Ukrainian refugees
On the farthest east side of the exhibit hall, fans can find a booth seeking to raise funds for refugees of the war in Ukraine. The “Comics for Ukraine” project brings together a wide range of creators to make a comic book anthology and other products for sale. The group partners with Operation USA, a nonprofit humanitarian organization.
6. Large, fuzzy backpacks bobbing around
Colin Wood (left) and Calvin Kosciuk (right) sport giant, furry backpacks in order to promote Dr. Squatch bar soap, a vegan soap for men. Wood is from Sunset Beach and this SDCC 2022 is his second Comic-Con. Kosciuk is from Los Angeles and SDCC 2022 is his first Comic-Con.
7. Political, yet satirical, comic books
Keenspot’s booth in the exhibit hall had its lineup of politically-themed, parody comic books on display, ranging from “Trump’s Titans” to “Biden’s Titans” and “The Superior AOC.”
8. ‘Boba Fett, Boba Tea’
Comic-Con attendee Steve Ahnin leaned into a play on words for his Star Wars cosplay. Ahnin said he dressed as “Boba Fett, Boba Tea,” a nod to the popular drink and the Star Wars bounty hunter (featured recently in “The Book of Boba Fett” on Disney+).
9. This funny news from the ‘Severance’

10. A very creepy scene at the ‘American Horror Stories’ activation
The FX installation by the San Diego waterfront featured scenes from two of its most popular shows, “American Horror Story” and “What We Do in The Shadows.” Additionally, it featured promos for new shows, such as “The Old Man.” Visitors can venture into a “Garden of the Dolls” and some lucky fans get to have their makeup done by an original designer from “American Horror Stories.”
11. Special San Diego library cards for locals
The San Diego Public Library has special, Comic-Con-themed library cards available in the exhibit hall for San Diego residents. The exclusive card, licensed by Comic-Con, was designed by Tijuana artist Charles Glaubitz and will be the first time a San Diego Public Library card has been produced in Spanish, officials said in a statement. The limited-edition card features the niño burro character from Glaubitz’s “Once Upon a Time in Tijuana” comic book series reading a book with the Central Library dome and the Tijuana Arch at the bottom of the card.
