The 2019-20 hockey season in San Diego is over.

The American Hockey League on Monday canceled all remaining games and the Calder Cup playoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The announcement came one month to the day after the regular season originally was scheduled to end.

“After a lengthy review process, the American Hockey League has determined that the resumption and completion of the 2019-20 season is not feasible in light of current conditions,” the league said in a statement. “The League’s operational focus has turned toward actively preparing for the 2020-21 season.”

The San Diego Gulls had played 57 of their 68 scheduled games. With a 30-19-6-2 record, the Gulls were in fourth place in the AHL Pacific Division, which would have been good enough to qualify for the postseason for the fourth time in their five seasons.

In a statement, the Gulls said they “fully the decision made today by the American Hockey League. … While we were hopeful to complete the 2019-20 season, the health and safety of our fans, staff, players, working personnel and community is our number one priority.”

The Gulls said fans holding tickets for any of the six canceled home games will have the option to use them as a credit toward games in 2020-21, donate the credit to the San Diego Gulls Foundation or request a refund.

The 2020-21 schedule has not been announced. The AHL season usually begins in early October.
